Who were the seven charter members in what ultimately became the Big Ten Conference? Who was the 10th team to join, making it the “Big Ten”?

Note: On the hard copy version of the newsletter the question was improperly worded as the “six” charter members.

Answer: In 1895 seven university presidents gathered to establish the principles for the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives. Included, was Lake Forest College. However, the following year (1896) when the group met to establish the conference, Lake Forest was not at the meeting and replaced by the University of Michigan. The seven (7) charter members included:

  • University of Chicago University of Illinois University of Minnesota Northwestern University Purdue University University of Wisconsin
  • University of Michigan

The 10th team to join the conference was The Ohio State University in 1912 after both Iowa and Indiana joined in 1899. However, the reference to the conference as the Big Ten was in 1917 after Michigan rejoined following a 9 year absence.
